Athlete Suspended For Driving Friend

Erin Cox, a High School senior volleyball player, was suspended for five games and lost her position as captain of the team after she drove to a party to pick up a friend that was too drunk to drive. Upon arrival at the party, police were already at the scene arresting several people for underage possession of alcohol and warned others that they’d be called to court for drinking. Cox was among those that were called to court regardless of Boxford police officer Brian Neeley’s confirmation of Erin’s sobriety.

If I was in Erin Cox’s situation I would've done the same thing. I wouldn't want to just leave my friend drunk at a party or have her take the risk of getting into a car accident due to drunk driving. The school’s decision to suspend her from five games and strip her from her captaincy would affect her in a very negative way. Considering she was an athlete, she probably wanted to continue to play volleyball in college or earn a sports scholarship. Her suspension would lead colleges to believe that she is not the best candidate for their school or sports team. The whole situation looked really bad for Erin Cox. The article mentioned that, “Cox's mother, Eleanor, told the Boston Herald her daughter was among those summoned despite Boxford police officer Brian Neeley vouching for Erin's sobriety.” I don’t understand how Erin Cox was still punished and the police officers vouching for her sobriety was totally disregarded. Personally, I think any school would've done the same thing considering the circumstances around the situation.

  1. I believe any school would have the same consequences, especially since it looks like she could've be coming to consume some alcohol. However, I believe the appropriate thing to do could be gone more into investigation on why she had arrives at the party. Saving someones life should have been the police, and schools main factor. I think you did a great job giving a descriptive summary or the article. In your incorporated quote, you really debated how the police still made assumptions even though she was sober. Also, “I wouldn't want to just leave my friend drunk at a party or have her take the risk of getting into a car accident due to drunk driving (2par2sen), I totally agree with you! Driving while intoxicated has killed a large number of teens, Erin Cox was doing the right thing in my eyes.

  2. Story fell apart in the local media. http://valleypatriot.com/erin-cox-mom-daughter-was-at-drinking-party-nearly-30-minutes-claims-punished-based-on-sex-in-restraining-order-request/

This story should never gone viral, the media and the school can NOT talk about court records of a minor. And the officers statement came from a civil correspondence and not a police report. The lawyer, Wendy Murphy is often an expert on legal cases in the media. So she has access to use public opinion, even though the public can not have access to all the facts.

We don't know her story, but her friend never came forward and at a high school level her peers who were at the party themselves are reporting something else.... ahem.

No one was 'arrested', all were summons. She was at the party for 30 minutes (according to her own mother) before the cops showed up.

  3. I somewhat agree with you and think that her punishment was a little too harsh especially from law enforcement. She was sober and trying to help a friend so I really don't understand why she got in so much trouble from law enforcement. However, the punishment that she got from her school is somewhat understandable because alcohol is so big in our generation and they are trying to do whatever they can to push us away from it and thats usually by taking away what we love the most which in this case seemed to be sports for the student. I am think it was right for the school to punish her so that she would no to not make the mistake her friend did and stay away fro alcohol but I don't like the severity of her punishment. After all she was sober and was there to help a friend.
